Natural Heritage of Malaysia by Children

329 children between the age of 7 to 12 years old celebrated World Heritage Day by taking part in the annual ICOMOS Malaysia Children Art Competition which was held in three towns this year - Melaka, Kuala Lumpur and Sandakan. Themed 'Warisan Alam Semula Jadi Malaysia' or 'Natural Heritage of Malaysia', these children created art pieces showcasing the unique flora and fauna of this country within three hours.

The competition was held on 14 April 2019 at Balai Seni Lukis Negara, Kuala Lumpur; Taman Bunga Merdeka, Banda Hilir, Melaka; and the Sandakan Regional Public Library in Sandakan. This was the first ICOMOS Malaysia event in Sandakan, attracting participants from as far as Tawau.

The ICOMOS Malaysia Children Art Competition, its 5th cycle this year, coincides with the International Day of Monuments and Sites (popularly known as World Heritage Day) which is celebrated globally on every 18 April. Conceived to nurture an understanding of our heritage among children through art, the competition has covered various themes: Warisan Kita; Makanan Warisan Kita; Permainan Tradisi; Zaman Pra Sejarah di Malaysia; and the latest, Warisan Alam Semula Jadi di Malaysia. The children have never failed to impress us with their creative interpretation of these themes.

Participants in Sandakan at the Regional Sandakan Public Library
